Annual Report:- 2011 – 12

Govt.College for Women, Faridabad has catered to the academic aspirations of young women for more than two decades now. It was in the year 1987 when this college started working as a separate girls wing. It acquired its independent status in 1992. It wont be an exaggeration to say that this college is now ranked amongst the prestigious women institutes of Haryana. We have been able to raise this college to its present dimensions by our dedicated efforts and firm determination. This year the college has been declared the centre of excellence by the Education Department of the Govt of Haryana. The college has its website www.gcwfaridabad.org
Building
The college building has gradually expanded. This year the construction of gymnasium hall has been completed. This will ease the constraint of space that we have been facing for quite some time now. A special emphasis is laid on the beautification and cleanliness of college premises. Lawns are regularly pruned and maintained.
College Motto
In the true spirit of the college motto (No deliverance without knowledge), we have been consistently striving to impart knowledge to our students in its wider sense, keeping our attention focussed on the overall development of their personality. Apart from class room teaching, they are given ample opportunities to participate in different activities: cultural, co-curricular and athletic.
Curriculum & Enrolment
The college has four faculties – Humanities, Commerce Business Administration and Journalism. In Humanities,Hindi and English, are compulsory subjects. Ten other subjects are taught in Humanities : Home Science, Psychology, Geography, Music Vocal & Instrumental, Sanskrit, Economics, Sociology, History, Political Science. The students are also taught Environment Studies and Computer Education. This year a total of 1231 students were enrolled out of which 579 were in Humanities, 375 in Commerce 182 in BBA and 95 in BJMC (Hons).
Teaching Staff:
Besides Principal, there are 20 Faculty members in different departments. Of these seven are Ph. Ds and seven have done M.Phil. During this session Ms Manju Pathak Associate Prof. Hindi and Dr Siloni Verma in the Department of Psychology got transferred to Govt College, Panchkula and GovtCollege, Sector 14, Gurgaon respectively and Mr C S Vashisht from Govt College, Tigaon joined here in the Department of Commerce .
Academic Pursuits of Teachers
Teachers, while imparting knowledge to students, themselves strive to update their knowledge. Needless to say that the teachers here are highly dedicated and devoted to their profession. Besides working conscientiously with their students, they also find time for academic pursuits and other achievements.
This year Ms Leena Sharma, Assistant Professor, Commerce presented a paper on Use of IT in performance Appraisal at a National Conference on Employees Performance Appraisals ... held on 25thNov 2011 at Manav RachnaInternationalUniversity. She presented another paper on Glaciers and Global Warming at one day National Seminar on Environmental Challenges on Feb 2,2012, at G C W Panchkula.
Dr Pallavi Saxena Asst. Prof. Engish attended a Refresher Course in English from ASC, Jamia Millia Islamia , New Delhi from Aug 9, 2011 to Sept 3,2011. She also presented two papers, one entitled Toni Morrisons Beloved: A Paradigm of Feminist Anger and Restoration of the Self at a National Conference held at Lingayas University, Faridabad on 3rd ,4th Feb,2012 and another entitled Hearing Subaltern Voices of Resistance in Shashi Deshpandes novel The Dark Holds No Terror at a National Seminar on Indian Writings in English held at Govt College Sec 14 Gurgaon on 16th &17th Feb, 2012. Dr Pallavi presented a paper entitled The God of Small Things : Arundhati Roys Rendezvous with Post Modernism at International Seminar on Post Modernism: Dimensions and Challenges organised at ShreeVarshneyCollege, Aligarh from 1st to 3rd March 2012.
Ms Satvinder Kaur, Asst Prof, History ,attended an Orientation Course from 30th Sept to 1st Nov 2011 at ASC, Jamia Millia Islamia ,New Delhi.
All the three faculty members of English Department, Ms Deepak Vinayak, Ms Sushma Pankaj and Dr. Pallavi Saxena attended a two day National Seminar on Indian Aesthetics in English Literature held at Govt College, Faridabad.
I myself, along with Ms Sushma Pankaj, Assoc. Prof., English attended NAAC sponsored one day State Level Sensitizing Workshop on Process of Accreditation on 18th Nov, 2011 at Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Khanpur Kalan, Sonipat.I along with Dr Shama Kalra Associate Professor, Sanskrit and Ms Satvinder Kaur and Ms Leena Sharma Assistant Professors, History and Commerce respectively also attended a two day Inter Faculty National Workshop on 13th and 14th of Mar 2012 held at Govt College, Tigaon .
Ministerial Staff
Besides a Senior Librarian and a Computer Type Instructor, there are at present one Deputy Supdt, one Assistant ,two Clerks, one JLA, two LAs ,one Library Attendant and one Restorer working conscientiously towards the smooth functioning of the college. In addition to that there is one Sweeper and three Chowkidars working for the betterment of the institution .The post of a Tabla Player is lying vacant which has been filled up temporarily . There is demand for one Sweeper and one Clerk.
Mr. Narayan Singh JLA retired this year.Mr. Chaman Prakash joined the office as Deputy Supdt.
University Results
The college pass percentage this year has been far above University results. The results of almost all the classes have been cent percent.Only in three classes i,e BAII,BAIII,&,B.ComIII the result has been 83%, 85% and 98.04% respectively.
I congratulate the students and the teaching staff who have laboured hard to achieve this commendable pass percentage.
Examination
The House Examination has been abolished from this year.The university has introduced semester system in almost all the classes except BA & BJMC III year.The university conducts exams twice a year. Besides ,class tests and assignments are given to students as per the schedule framed by the College Exam Committee to assess their performance Dr Gajraj Yadav is the Registrar of the College Exam Committee. Dr Sharma Kalra ,Ms Amita Kumari & Ms Archana Verma are the Asst. Registrars.
Library
Library is an academic adornment of an educational institution. This is the place where one seeks intellectual solace. In the silent and secluded atmosphere of the library, the students as well as the teachers quench their intellectual thirst.
Our library is well equipped with books, magazines and journals. At present there are 9539 books in stock. Six newspapers, four in Hindi and two in English and six magazines have been subscribed. This year the college received grant of Rs two lakhs fifty thousand. Out of that an amount of Rs.1,34,000 /- was spent on the purchase of books related to new syllabi ,Rs. 50,137/. were spent on the purchase of two computer tables and ten chairs. Besides, a desert cooler and an inverter with two batteries were also purchased.
The computerization of library is under process. Soul software has been installed in the library computer and to get 2,000 books installed, a draft for an amount of Rs 28,220 /- has been dispatched to Hartron Chandigarh.
Placement and Career Counselling Cell
The Placement and Career Counselling Cell has been set up in the college under the able guidance of Dr Gajraj Yadav. The students are apprised of career related information from time to time. The relevant pieces of information are pasted on the notice board. The guests are also invited to keep the students abreast of the latest information.
This year a ten day Workshop was organised. Lectures were delivered by Resource Persons on Realization of Power of Self, Communication Skills, Team Management Skills, Stress Management, Power of Super Concentration, Resume Writing, Interview and Presentation Skills. Career Counselling Sessions were also held.
Two Extension lectures were delivered, one by Sh KK Jain, Principal, GovtCollege, Hodal and another by Dr Ashok Diwaker, PrincipalGovtCollege, Sec. 14, Gurgaon.
Twenty one students of B Com III year participated in Job Fair and Fast Tract Training held at GovtCollege, Sec. 14, Gurgaon.
Distance Education
Distance Education Centre of MDU Rohtak has been working in the college .However over the last two years ,new admissions are not being given. This year 271 students in BA and 79 in B.Com final year have been enrolled. These classes are held on Sundays and gazetted holidays. Teaching faculty has been arranged to the entire satisfaction of students.
IGNOU Centre
The Indira Gandhi National Open University has set up its center in our college.Three hundred students have been enrolled this semester for M.B.A ,B.A & B.Com .
Computer Education
The college has three well equipped computer labs with 80 computers.They cater to the need of the students of all the faculties, B.Com, BBA, BJMC and Arts who pursue Computers as one of the compulsory subjects . Two computer labs have been upgraded by installing LCD projectors therein to acquaint students with latest technology and to help them learn in a better way.
EDUSAT
EDUSAT lectures are being successfully telecast for BA / BCom I & III year students . These have become very popular among them. The schedule is regularly put on the notice board and the concerned students, accompanied by their teachers attend these classes on fixed days.
Cultural Activities
Our students, besides being exposed to academic pursuits are also provided with adequate opportunities to take part in cultural activities. It gives a boost to their confidence and thus enables them to develop into integrated personalities.
Youth Festival
Youth festival is an event that our students look forward to. Students from different colleges get an opportunity to interact with one another and participate in the spirit of healthy competition. This academic year Zonal Youth Festival was held at Govt.College Sector-14 Gurgaon, from Nov.7 to Nov.9, 2011 Like previous years our students participated therein with full fanfare and enthusiasm. I feel legitimately proud and pleased to announce that the performance of our students was immensely commendable. About 18 students took part in the 20 events.Department of music participated in Group Song, Qawali & General Group Song. However we bagged three prizes. Group Song General was adjudged 2nd , Bhajan 2nd & Sanskrit Shalokkocharran 2nd. Dr Nisha Wadhwa & Dr Shama Kalra are to be congratulated for the above said achievements.
Dr Nisha Wadhwa is the coordinator of Youth Festival Committee and Dr Gajraj Yadav is the Contingent in charge.
Co-curricular Activities
Different departments provide opportunities to students to organize various inter class programmes at college level. This keeps them busy round the year and also gives them the required diversion. The following activities were undertaken during the session :
• The History Dept organized Essay Writing Competition in the month of Sept to commemorate Haryana Heroes Martyrdom Day on the 23rd of sept. The students were made to write on the topic The Glorious History of Haryanas Heroes . Inter class quiz was held in the month of Jan.
• The Dept of Home Science organised interclass quiz and Antakshri competition in the beginning of the session.Students were prepared for Rangoli and Collage Competition for participation at Zonal Youth Festival.A team of two students participated in Inter college Mehndi Competition held at K.L.MehtaDayanandCollege in the month of Feb. 2012. Shikha of BAII got second prize in the competition.
• The Language Society organized interclass Poetry Recitation & Declamation Contest in the month of Sept. This was done to select students for participation at Zonal Youth Festival. They were then prepared for Symposium in Hindi and Poetry Recitation in English .Their performance at Youth Festival was appreciable.
• The Geography Dept also took special care that the students are given ample exposure besides mere class room teaching.
Inter class Geography Quiz Contest was organized in the month of Januray.
Three extension lectures were delivered in the month of February ,2012 by Shri D R Khullar,Retd.Principal Dr J.S Rana ,retired Associate Professor and Dr Ashok Diwakar , PrincipalGovtCollege,Sec 14, Gurgaon.
Inter class Science Exibition was first organized at college level on 21-2-2012 .Eight students made four models .The model on Afforestation was adjudged first. The same model prepared by Priya of BAIII & Sunita of BAII was displayed at Inter district science exhibition held at Govt College, Faridabad on 22& 23 Feb 2012.
• The Deptt of Sanskrit organized Inter class Essay Writing ,Shlokochcharan & Quiz Contests. Students were adjuged I,II & III on the basis of their performance .A student was prepared for Sanskrit Shlokchcharan and Declamation for participation at Zonal Youth Festival .
• A model on Effect of Stress on various Body Systems was prepared by the students in the Department of Psychology to participate in District level Science Exhibition held at Pt J.L.N Govt College Faridabad on 22nd &23rd February 2012. This work was highly appreciated by the Chief Guest Mr Yashpal Yadav, S.D.M Faridabad on stage.
• National Festivals, Independence Day & Republic Day were celebrated with patriotic zeal and fervour. National Flag was unfurled, patriotic songs were sung and laddoos were distributed on both the occasions.
Educational Tours
Two one day trips were organized in the month of December to see Agra Fort ,Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri .Another three day trip was organised in the month of March to take students to Jaipur ,the Pink City with historical significance.Dr Nisha Wadhwa is convenor of Tour Committee and the other members are Dr Gajraj ,Ms Amita Kumari &Ms. Archana Verma.
Alumni Association
The college received an over whelming response from the alumni this year.More than 100 of them gathered this year for the meet and nostalgically shared their experiences with the current students.They had all appreciation for the staff and the Principal of the college who had arranged the Alumni Meet for the first time.
Ms Bimla Vishnoi is the Convener of Alumni Association.
Legal Literacy Cell
Various Interclass competitions like Poetry Recitation ,Essay writing Competition were held under Legal Literacy Cell on 7.9.11 . A large number of students participated enthusiastically .Winners of these competitions were sent to Pt JLN Govt PG College Faridabad to participate in District Legal Literacy Cell Function at division level .Divya Goswami of B.A II won second prize at division level. Besides it, Mr. Ravinder Gupta and Mr. Nibras Ahmed , the empanelled advocates visited the college on 16.11.11 and 18.1.12 and addressed a large assembly of students to spread legal awareness among them.
The Legal Literacy Cell works under the guidance of Ms Deepak Vinayak & Ms Namrata Sharma.
Voters Committee
A Voters Committee has been formed in the college to provide Voter Id cards to maximum number of students. A drop box has been placed in girls common room for this purpose. Various competitions were held to celebrate National Voters Day on 25.1.12. Many students participated in these competitions and winners were sent to Mini Secretariat where Anjali Pandey of B.Com II won second prize in Poster Making Competition. Anjali Pandey also won third prize in the same competition at state level and received a prize of Rs. 1500/- at the hands of Governor of Haryana. A rally of students was also held in the village Daultabad on 25-1-12 to promote voting.
Ms Deepak Vinayak is the Nodal officer of Voters Committee. Ms Sandhya & Ms Amita assist her.
Women Cell
The Women Cell has been set up in the college with the sole objective of empowering the girl students.The Cell undertakes various activities from time to time which have a focus on overall development of personality so that when they leave this institution ,they are courageous and confident than before.
This year again students remained involved in various such activities throughout the session
Two students Divya and Navneet of BA II participated in National level Essay Writing Competition held at GCW Panchkula in Oct 2011
An Extension Lecture on issues like Female Foeticide, Domestic Violence and Dowry Prohibition Act was delivered by Ms Jasmine Kaur on 12th Jan 2012.
A team of ten students was sent to participate in Panel Discussion on women related issues held at DAV Centenary College Faridabad on 1st March 2012.
The Women Cell also coordinated with the college and District Red Cross Society in organizing Health Check up Camp on Feb 1,2012.The programme was presided over by Ms Seema Gupta , Chairperson of Distt Red Cross Society.
Classes on self grooming and self defense were organized for the personality development of students. Eight students of our college who attended the self defense classes participated in district level WUSHU championship and won 3 gold medals,3 silver and 2 bronze in different events. These girls will now participate in state level championship.
Besides these, a demonstration each on flower making and needle work was given to students in Nov 2011.
The Women Cell works under the able supervision of Dr Siloni Verma and Ms Ritika Gupta.
NSS :
The NSS unit has been functional in the college with 108 students enrolled for NSS activities this year.
The first one day camp was organized for Tree Plantation.Ms Sharda Rathore,Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Haryana was the Chief Guest.
Volunteers participated in the Inter-college Slogan writing/Poster making, Declamation and Poetry Recitation competitions organized by the NSS unit of AggarwalCollege, Ballabgarh.
Three volunteers underwent the AIDS Peer Training at GovtCollege,Sec-14, Gurgaon.
The second one day camp was organized at the time of the inauguration of Gym .The volunteers performed various duties allotted to them during Sports Meet and Health Check up Camp etc
A seven day (day and night ) camp was organized in the college in which 50 volunteers participated. Scintillating lectures on Legal Rights, Women Empowerment, Health and Hygiene, HIV/AIDS & its Prevention, Environment and Water Conservation, Training of Yoga were delivered by eminent scholars. The volunteers disseminated their knowledge and information among the villagers of Daulatabad. Various rallies were also taken out to the village Daultabad to create an awareness about the value of suffrage (on National Voters Day), health and hygiene, literacy and education etc. Apart from this, the camp also inculcated the habit of early rising and exercise in the volunteers. It taught them the dignity of labour as well as the value of serving the society. It was also instrumental in developing a feeling of solidarity and togetherness among the volunteers by participating in all sorts of activities like cultural, games etc.
Red Cross Unit
The college has a Red Cross unit that works under the guidance of Ms Krishna Sheoran, Associate Professor Sociology. In coordination with the Distt Red Cross Society chaired by Ms Seema Gupta,wife of honble Deputy Commissioner Faridabad, a Health Awarenesss Camp was organized in college on 01.02.2012 under district level Anaemia Bhagao Abhiyan. Various resource persons from BK hospital Faridabad ,spoke on diverse topics which included anaemia ,HIV/AIDS,drug addiction ,blood donation etc.The students were made to take pledge to work against female foeticide .Thus the students were made aware of various health issues.They also had a private session with the doctors and counsellors from B K hospital wherein they discussed their personal health problems.
Prior to this a Health Check up camp was held in college on Jan 25,2012.The Hb count and blood group of about 500 students and teachers was checked .The students with low Hb count were given medicines, free of cost .A team of Eye specialist ,Gyneacologist and General Physician led by Deputy CMO BK hospital also examined students. A team from the District Red Cross Society revisited the college to check Hb count and blood group of those students who couldnt get it done on their first visit to college.Both these programmes were organized in coordination with the Women Cell of the college.
On 18th Jan 2012, sweaters were distributed to the needy students out of Red Cross fund.Ms Krishna Sheoran in charge college Red Cross unit attended meetings and seminars held at district level from time to time throughout the session.
Sports
Besides academic and cultural activities the students also take part in games and athletic events.
The Annual Athletic Meet of the college was held on 9th and 10th of Feb 2012 under the guidance and supervision of Sh Rajbir Singh, Retd. Lecturer, Physical Education working as guest faculty at GovtCollege,Tigaon .Ninety students enthusiastically took part in different athletic events. The Meet was inaugurated by Sh Anil Rao,IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police, Faridabad and it was closed by Sh Anand Kaushik MLA Faridabad. Ms Shalu of BA III was adjudged the Best Athlete.
A modern well equipped multipurpose Gym has been set up in the college .We have also taken over the possession of newly constructed Gymnasium Hall.
Mr Shamsher Singh has been looking after the affairs of sports in the absence of a regular faculty
Grants Aids and Scholarship
We are deeply indebted to the Directorate for being very liberal and generous in sending grants for the betterment of the institution. All the grants are judiciously utilized under the wise guidance of college bursar Dr. A.K.Gupta.The college received various grants amounting to Rs.9,53,500/- which were utilized for the betterment of the college.
The Goverment provides financial aid and scholarships to the needy and meritorious students.
This year all the students (numbering 224) belonging to Scheduled Castes were given a scholarship of Rs.14,000/- each by the Goverment of Haryana.The amount was directly transferred to their bank accounts
Six students each of B.A III and B.Com III from both General and Reserved category received Merit scholarship from MDU Rohtak for standing I,II,III in their respective classes in the University Exam held in 2011.The amount of these prizes was Rs.5000/-,Rs 3000/- and Rs. 2000/-The total amount of Rs. 40,000/- was distributed among 12 students.
The Goverment of Haryana also gives merit scholarship of Rs.3000/- each to 10 students for all the four faculties viz. Arts,Commerce,Business Administration and Journalism.This scholarship is given on the basis of their performance in class XII exam.
The grand children of freedom fighters also get scholarship by the Goverment.This year four students received an amount of Rs.14,000/- each.
The names of 72 students from Backward Classes have been sent to the Directorate for scholarship.
Mr Shamsher Singh Assoc. Prof. Geography is the in charge of Students Aids and Scholarships.
A grant of Rs 8,41,526 was received from the UGC under the XI plan (2007-2012 ).The amount was spent on the general development of the college, for Job Oriented Courses -BBA and BJMC and for the Placement Cell.
Ms Namrata Sharma is the in charge of UGC Committee.
Earn while you Learn
Our college also receives the benefit of Earn while you Learn scheme which provides them with an opportunity of earning while learning.Thus the spirit of work culture and dignity of labour is inculcated among the students.During this academic session 12 students have been engaged in the library and labs of the college.These students have helped in the issue and return of the books in the library and have contributed in maintaining labs and keeping office records.They have also provided assistance in computer labs .A grant of Rs.1,16,000/-was received from the Directorate under this scheme.
Ms Bimla Vishnoi is the in charge of Earn while you Learn scheme.
